Youth Ministry Today

by Woody on May 16, 2012

It is very fascinating to see God working.
Several weeks ago a godly sister in our church sent me a webpage (whitehorseinn.org) and a note to listen to an interview with Brian Cosby who has just published a book entitled Giving up Gimmicks: Reclaiming Youth Ministry from an Entertainment Culture.   I didn’t listen to the material but after a conversation Sunday with Adam and Kristen I went back to it and was struck by a number of points brought up by the author which Adam expressed.  Adam, let me just say, stick to your guns!  Let’s not simply adopt culture’s stance to separate young adults as a group and then not feed them with the deep truths of the gospel.  Brian Cosby’s comments at first seem to be over the top but then, the number of young people leaving the church or finding a tough time fitting in church as adults cannot be denied.  Our challenge is to demonstrate a different path, in love.  To be sure, not all churches fail ministering to the next generation, but the influence of the world’s philosophies are with us and we need to be sensitive to show new believers a different way.

I found the youth ministries 2 part discussion at whitehorseinn.org and have listened to the first one so far. Its amazing to hear people talk about what we have been experiencing and trying to understand! After all we are only getting back to God’s design for how to organize and nurture His children in the way we should live. Great find Dad, this is exciting!

I’m glad people are thinking about it! Yes, I’ve enjoyed how our parents have raised us inter-generationally. I feel like one gains so much perspective by being friends with people of various ages.

Audrey,
Nice testimony. As a word of encouragement we know of several families that exhibit an inter-generational approach. The Stroud Family (Tod & BJ) is one.
