Dissertation Milestone

by Gary on August 26, 2010

Phyllis and I have been in the DC area this week. We arrived Monday night and are just now leaving. This afternoon I turned in the final draft of my dissertation! I also did the paperwork necessary to defend it. The defense date is October 15. It might have been sooner but I’ll be in Mexico the first week of October. After the defense I have 30 days to include the edits of the examining committee. There’s more to do, but this is a big milestone.

It is interesting how the Lord uses negative events for our good. I was able first of all to switch a day so I could accompany Gary on this spontaneous trip. On Tues I noticed that a bug bite on my leg wasn’t looking good so I started nursing it and on Wed I decided that I should go to the Dr. They were concerned about staph infection so when I told them that I worked in a hospital they said what I thought they would and that is that I shouldn’t work for 3 days until the antibiotics were doing its job. That meant we could stay at the school longer. Otherwise Gary would have had to finish on our trip home and then overnight ASAP to the school. Needless to say I didn’t mind missing work and very happy that Gary finished! I wasn’t happy about my leg (which is a lot better) but the Lord turned it around for good. One of Gary’s colleagues has called his work ground breaking ( I think it is too) and so this big step forward seemed pretty important.

Alan and Janie and family, sorry we got to Bristol too late to see you all and that breakfast didn’t work out. Hope we can work something out for our next trip.

I’m glad your leg is getting better. Do you know what kind of bug bite it was? How do you get staph from a bug bite?

Yea!!!! about Gary’s groundbreaking work!

It was from working out in the yard and then I scratched it too much I guess. It is behind my knee and the 9 hour ride to VA probably also had something to do with it. Actually they haven’t called me to tell me yet if it was staph, they just wanted to be cautious. Staph is actually a good germ usually and is naturally on our skin and keeps bad germs away. It causes a problem when there is an overgrowth which can occur under various circumstances. I never had that happen before.
