Music on my Mind

I’m wondering if anyone has this same kind of experience:

I wake up most mornings with a song going through my head. I don’t mean within a few minutes after waking up. I mean that when I wake up–and sometimes even before I wake up–it’s going through my head. I don’t remember when it started (or when I became aware of it) but it’s been going on for a long time.

Often they are songs I haven’t heard in years. Only once–maybe twice–was it because I had heard the song the day before or recently before. Sometimes I just get a few of the words, and don’t recognize what the song is until I look it up on the intenet.

The songs are usually in English, but sometimes in Spanish.

One time it was a tune I didn’t even know the words to (although I assume I must have heard it somewhere at some time.) There are places on the internet where you can hum a tune and it will tell you what it is. That’s what I did, and found out it was a combination of two songs, one of which I never remembered hearing before and didn’t know the words.

Sometimes they are songs I don’t even like or wouldn’t choose to sing. Sometimes I say to myself, “Where in the world did that come from?”

Once in a while, instead of a song, I have a very vivid, usually theological, dream just before waking that seems to have a message with it.

Sometimes I have awakened with a song, fallen back to sleep, and then awakened with a different song. There are also a few times when I am aware of a song and recognize at least part of it, but by the time I’m fully awake, I can’t remember it anymore (indicated below by a question mark).

There may be times when I awaken with a song, but just don’t remember it.

I’ve noticed that sometimes there are long gaps of time during which I either don’t get songs, or don’t remember them. Jan 15-Feb 10 is an example. I do know I was under a lot of pressure during that time, wondering how things were going to work out with my job switch, and we were traveling a lot. June was also a pretty sparse month. Not sure why.

If they are Christian songs I usually look up the words and think about them.

As of today, 4 of the songs appear 3 times,¹ and 16 appear twice.²
