Prayer for Gary’s trip to Peru

by phyllis on February 1, 2013

Gary was supposed to leave on Wed but due to the weather his one flight was cancelled so they just changed him to Thurs. There had been a tornado along I75 which shut it down for several hours so there wouldn’t have been any way to get him to his flight to Atlanta anyway. Then when we were just 10 min down the road on Thurs to go to the airport our home alarm systen went off so we called police. Everything was fine thankfully. The motion sensor that tripped the alarm was the one on the kitchen window sill so only thing we can figure is that we had set up on the island a new water filter system that was stainless steel and very shiny. We guess there was some movement outside that was reflected and set off the alarm(was it Bumbalo?). Thankfully we did get to the airport on time. We did take the opportunity to tell the police about strange goings on at our neighbors house. Gary arrived safely to Peru but did not get to bed until 2AM. This trip is to scout out where a new team might decide to minister. Thanks for your prayers.

I also had trouble leaving Arequipa. My flight on Monday evening was going to be late or cancelled due to fog. Everyone was waiting to see if their flight was going to be cancelled of if the fog would lift. The airport is small and there aren’t many places to sit. I either walked around, leaned against a wall if I could find one that was unoccupied, or sat on the floor if I could find a spot with something to lean against. I waited until about 10 and my flight was cancelled and postponed until the next day due to fog. For some reason my connecting flight from Lima to Atlanta was not connected to this ticket, so when I finally got back to the hotel where I had been staying I had to call Delta in the States to rebook. They charged me 200 dollars.

When I got to the Arequipa airport on Tuesday, there was some fog, but not too bad. So they boarded us. Just as they were about to close the doors, they announced that the airport was closed due to fog. So they ordered us to deplane. There was a huge roar from the passengers: “NO.” They refused to deplane. Their argument was that the day before they had told the airline that leaving at 4:00 in the afternoon was going to run the risk of dealing with fog again. Plus the night before, the fog finally lifted and a plane was able to leave. Furthermore, they argued that there was no place to sit in the airport. They also argued that the only reason they wanted us to deplane was so they could save fuel. They argued that the airline should take care of us better. The authorities insisted several times, but most people—including me—stayed on the plane. The crew seemed to be sympathetic. They turned on the air conditioning and some music and attended to people’s needs. The authorities said that the fog might lift by 9:00. But a lot of you were praying, and within an hour the fog unexpectedly lifted enough to leave. So I arrived in Lima in time for my connecting flight to Atlanta.

Praise God for hearing and answering our prayers. That was a tense situation.
