Clarence G. Hagerty, Jr.

“Juney”

Passed into Glory on Wednesday, January 4th, 2012, at home with his loving family present. Juney was born in Wilmington DE in 1923 to Clarence Sr. & Lena (Pearson) Hagerty.

At 19 years of age Juney served & protected his country in World War II, staying in Europe on the front lines for 3 years, made 3 beach landings, earned the purple heart after being struck by enemy fire twice & suffered through trench feet. We thank him for protecting our freedoms.

Upon his return home he married Betty Luff in 1947, built his own home & raised 6 children while working for Plumbers Local 26. He was a great husband, dad & poppop & enjoyed hunting with the boys, gardening, puzzles, singing in the choir and working with his hands.

His dedication to God was paramount in his life & was evidenced in his kind, loving & generous ways, often not charging for work performed for friends and neighbors. He served God also by his work at Cedars Methodist Church and as a trustee at Faith Baptist Church. He taught Godly servitude to his family by example, such as taking his kids along to rake leaves of his own accord, even in the moonlight, at Sandy Cove in North East MD. His mischievous & ornery personality made for some great laughs & we’re positive there’s some hootin’ and hollerin’ going on in heaven right now.

He is survived by Betty, his wife of 64 years; his brother Leroy Hagerty; daughter & son-in-law Linda & Kirk Phillips; daughter & son-in-law Phyllis & Gary Waldecker; son & daughter-in-law Don & Marge Hagerty; daughter & son-in-law Joyce & Mike Sorowice; daughter & son-in-law BJ & Todd Stroud; son & daughter-in-law Bobby & Sara Hagerty; 23 grandchildren; 12 great grand children; nieces, nephews and loads of other family & friends.

Nice. Why was he called “Juney”?

It comes from Junior. I hardly ever heard him called Clarence. People have spelled it different ways but I always liked Junney. He was also called Dusty as a child but I don’t know where that comes from. His brother’s name was Raymond Melvin but everyone called him Hoot and he was a hoot.
