Update on my leg injury

by Gary on August 23, 2011

I called the doctor this morning to find out if it was OK to be walking on my leg. (I’ve been walking around all over the place, including playing disc golf.) He had referred me to another doctor, but I couldn’t get an appointment until next Monday. So he had me come in this afternoon (previously a PA he works with saw me). The good news is that the tear isn’t as bad as he thought it was by looking at the MRI. The bad news is that he wants me to wear a boot and use crutches for two weeks. The interesting news is that there are two theories in the medical field on how to treat a muscle tear like mine: 1) wear a boot and use crutches, and 2) walk around on it. So I was using a valid theory, but he wants me to change now to the other theory.

Hmm. Very interesting. I wonder how they know which theory they think is best. I’m glad the tear is not as bad as previously suspected.

i don’t like it when I get conflicting advice like that. I am glad it’s not as bad as it could have been.

Thanks for the update. We will pray that there is enough improvement so that your trip to Turkey will be comfortable. Dad

Glad it’s not as bad as first thought. How DO they come up with such opposite theories about treatment?

My suspicion is that with the walking theory healing takes longer, but it heals better so less therapy is needed later. With the crutches theory, healing is quicker but more therapy is needed once it heals. I actually have no idea, but my leg felt better when I was out playing disc golf on it.
