Out of Time

by David on May 14, 2011

I found out yesterday that I have officially run out of time to finish my dissertation. I was told that I cannot appeal either since I have not yet defended my proposal. )  They also told me that even if I were able to appeal, it might not be granted).  My jobs just haven’t allowed me the time to work on it like I needed to. I guess it wasn’t meant to be. Now, if I can just figure out another plan to get out of corporate America.

What a disappointment. It doesn’t seem fair. We will pray about the situation.

I was so sorry to hear about this. It seems like you have had to start a new proposal with every new job in order to have an appropriate venue for research. I know that you could easily put one together and defend the dissertation without any difficulty at all if you had the time. You know about organizations as well or better than anyone else in the program. Will you be able to get the EDS degree (for those who don’t know, that’s a Specialist in Education: more than a masters degree and less than a doctorate)? I think you should be able to. At least something for all your trouble.

I’ll be praying for you Uncle David. Have you ever thought of starting your own business?

We know that God works all things for His glory and our good, but this does not seem to accomplish either. Just do what you can and trust the Lord to lead you, Dad

That has got to be disappointing. I wonder what God has in mind. For sure He does have a plan in all this. That is the encouraging thing. I’ll be praying about this.

John Wycliffe devoted his life to translating the Bible into English. When he was nearly finished, it burned. Even in that difficult time, Wycliffe remained faithful to God, as I’m sure you are as well. Love you, Dad!

Thanks everyone for your prayers and your concerns. Gary, the EdS doesn’t really do anything for me, but I suppose I’ll inquire about it.

I talked to Dr. Schwandt today and we discussed a plan for appeal. It’s a risk in that I will have to do a lot of work with no promises. He wants me to go ahead and finish and defend my proposal this Summer. Then he’ll help me make an appeal before the review board in D.C. this Fall. He believes that if I have the proposal defense behind me, they might be somewhat more likely to hear an appeal. I feel I am about 65% complete with my latest proposal. I hope to get it to a point where I can submit a final draft by early July, make necessary edits, and then defend the proposal by the end of August. It will be a lot of work, but I am going to give it a try.

This good news, combined with the fact that I had a rather serendipitous discussion yesterday with the Program Director of the Master’s in OD Program at Vanderbilt, gives me a new-found hope. She may want me to teach a class at Vanderbilt in the spring (as an adjunct).

Thanks for everyone’s prayers.
