Tornadoes in Chattanooga Area

by Gary on April 29, 2011

I don’t know if it’s true, or how it might compare to the Katrina disaster, but I’ve heard someone on the news say this multiple tornado storm is the worst natural disaster in recent America history. Thankfully we escaped any damage. Nathan had more damage, but his house is basically OK, I think. Lost a lot of trees. Many people lost their homes. So far almost 300 dead (I think that figure is for the Chattanooga area). We have no power. No internet. We have a small generator that is able to keep our fridge and freezer going. My best guess is that we’ll be without power for a week or so. Also, the AT&T cell tower near our house was incapacitated, so my cell phone doesn’t work at home. But Phyllis and the girls still have a signal (they use Sprint). I’ll post some pictures as soon as I can. Right now I’m in Barnes and Noble using their free internet, but there are so many people here that the internet is extremely slow.

100 yards or so from Nathan's house. We coulnd't get there.

not as much damage at our house – though many places around us were devastated – only a couple of trees down in the back. We were in tornado warnings for 4 straight hours! We saw the weather man point one out on the screen – and it was directly over us! We stepped out on to the porch, where it was dead calm – a few seconds later, you could hear the roar of a train coming. We grabbed the kids and headed for the basement. Fortunately, a large hill behind us probably protected us (that’s where the trees went down). 18+ dead in our area. trees down. houses destroyed. But we are safe and sound – we have power and water. Wish we could come down and help you guys.

We had no wind even, just rain. But tornadoes did damage north of Atlanta and then later south of Atlanta. We prayed for protection all day and we thank the Lord that He did protect us. Dad

We had lots and lots of rain. Brought back bad memories of the 20+ inches we got a year ago at this time. But only about 7 inches. The Harpeth River (near our home) came out of its banks and several neighborhoods were sandbagging. We did have some, though no damage. Near us, many homes were destroyed. Tuscaloosa seem to get the brunt of it. Devastating footage. Does anyone know if Nathan needs any help?

What an adventure this all has been! We’ve been “camping” at our house. We don’t think we’ll have power for another 3-4 days. Quite interesting. We’ve been grilling a lot. In fact, last night we had some neighbors over and had a cook out. Delicious steak and veggie kabobs! Right now Andrea and I are at some friends’ house for lunch and the use of internet––and fellowship 😀 Since we can’t read or watch TV, Andrea and I have been listening to an audio book at night, which has been so fun. The book series is called “The 39 Clues” by several authors, the first book being by Rick Riordan. Anyway, there’s the Waldecker Update. Oh, and I have a job interview tomorrow morning with Creative Discovery Museum…

I am now staying with some friends that have power and have been able to charge my computer and cell phone.
I am extremely thankful to God for keeping me safe during the storms. My house basically sustained roof and siding damage…which is a far cry better than many in my area. All but one of the trees has been cut up and the roof has tarps on it. I am hoping to work some this week in the evenings getting the cut wood out of the front yard.
I have water, still no power. The electrical service to the house was ripped out so apparently I have some work to do to make my house ready to receive power. A guy from my church has said that he would look at it.
I will keep you posted as I hear more.

Uncle Gary, would you be able to help me with the willow tree sometime? I plan to start working in the yard after work today, possibly tomorrow, and Thursday.

Yes, I can help. I ordered a new chain for my chain saw, and I won’t get that until Wednesday. In it’s current condition I could probably use it to cut some smaller branches.
