A Tree by a Brook

In the mornings Phyllis and I take a walk in order to talk and pray. We always pass by this brook, which reminds me of Psalm 1:

He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.

Who is this man who so delights in God’s Word that everything he does prospers? I’m sure that when Jesus read this Psalm he saw himself in it. He is the one who fully trusts the Father, even as his calling brought him to the cross to rescue his people. And the Father prospered him by raising him from death and uniting us, his people, to him who has defeated death and sin.

In union with Christ, we his people who with imperfect faith believe in him, become increasingly like that tree, receiving nourishment from him, so that we also prosper–even if sometimes it doesn’t feel like it or look like it.

Certainly from the vantage point of the eternal state we will be able to look back and see so clearly what now we tend to doubt: “Whatever he does prospers.”

Good thoughts! I like that spot along our road, too.

I enjoy walking with you. Sometimes it is hard to see how he is prospering us in the midst of all that is going on around us but I know he is. Thanks for the reminder.
