In Italy

by sejwa on April 6, 2010

Hello everybody,
I arrived successfully into Milan, along with Bob Charity, a research professor at WashU. From there we had to take a bus to the train station, from which we took a train to Verona. Here we had to get off and take another train to Trento, where the workshop is taking place. The whole trip took about 3.5 hours. After we got into our hotel room ( Bob and I are sharing a room ), Bob and I took a walk around the town. We took a few little alley ways to a pizzeria because we hadn’t eaten lunch yet. Then we went to a small ice cream place. The consistency of the ice cream was very different from the ice cream I’ve had anywhere else. Very smooth and creamy. Some of the best I’ve had. The country here in the North of Italy is quite beautiful. We are surrounded by the Dolomite mountains, the sky is a clear, dark blue, and the climate is mild. There is a nice river running through Trento as well. The place reminds me a lot of Chile, except that the grass and foliage seem a brighter green and the inhabited places are much tidier. Many of the people also remind me of Chileans, which shows that there is indeed a lot of European influence in Chile.

Below are some of the pictures I’ve taken so far. I will try to get more pictures of Trento itself.

During the train rides, I saw many small vineyards

Also during the train ride. I think these are the Alps.

I took this picture from outside my hotel room. These are the Dolomite mountains, I believe.

The place where we are having our meetings.

The place where we have our meals and coffee breaks.

Another vineyard, near where the workshop is.

If you’re in Trent on Sunday, there’s a good church there that I’ve been to before. http://www.evangelicitrento.it. Of course, it’s in Italian…but you could pick up enough with your Spanish to catch the gist.

Did you also know that this city was host to the famous “Council of Trent” in church history?

Very nice pictures! I’d love to be there. Alan, that’s very interesting about the council of trent. We studied that this year in school.

Looks like you are already having a good time. Great to hear from you. What a lovely place. Can the Italians understand you in Spanish? Doesn’t sound like you are jet lagged. Have fun.

Thank you for the info about the church, Uncle Alan. I may be here on Sunday. Someone did point out to me that the Council of Trent was hosted at this city. I will try to find the place where the council is held.

I have experienced jet lag. I could barely stay awake on the train ride to Trento. Bob said that being in the sun helps with jet lag, so that is part of the reason we walked around so much on Monday. I also had difficulty falling asleep last night.

I have been able to communicate with the Italians in Spanish, which has been fun. This morning looked for a bread bakery that the clerk at the front desk told me about, but I couldn’t find it. Oh well, maybe tomorrow morning.

I can understand some of the Italian. I went to a bakery this morning, but the bread wasn’t warm 🙁
