History

For history/literature I have been studying Jonathan Edwards. However, studying him has lead me to studying the Puritans. I have enjoyed it very much. I was marveling today how people influence people. For example, the Puritans’ theology is basically founded in Calvin’s work. But Calvin, I think, founded much of his work on Augustine. God uses His people to help each other. I think I have been very inward lately, and much of it is due, I think, to growing and developing my personality. However, I do not want to use his as an excuse just to say it is okay to be inward. I want to love others, and partake of the joy of outwardness! It is so, well, impossible! Oh what mystery lay in this growth! However, the mystery of God, of Christ, is the answer, and I will trust His word. Hey James, could you put your paper on Augustine on the blog? I would be very interested to read it.

Speaking of Thesis/Jonathan Edwards, we’ll be studying American history next year in Humanities, and I was thinking of posssible thesis topics for next year. One of the first I thought of was Jonathan Edwards: he sounds like a really interesting character. He was a writer, missionary, theologian, pastor, etc. But there are so many neat figures from American history, I can’t decide.

James, Jonathan Edwards is a very interesting man. I think he would be a good choice. I have all of his works, if you want to borrow them. Who else have you considered doing it on?

You have all of his works?! I’ve heard he wrote a lot, so you must have quite a collection. Who else have I considered? Well, maybe Thomas Jefferson, George Whitefield, George Washington, Patrick Henry, Booker T. Washington, Theodore or Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Edgar Allan Poe. But it doesn’t have to be a person… I could write on Jamestown, or the Constitution, or the Declaration of Independece, etc. Do you have any more suggestions?
