Stony Brook Assembly Centennial

by micah on October 25, 2009

A century ago, in 1909, the Stony Brook Assembly was formed to provide Summer camps with Biblical teaching and training particularly for those who would be Sunday school teachers and such. The Stony Brook Assembly was responding to the need to replace the Summer camps that D. L. Moody had started in Massachusetts, but which had drifted from the truth of the gospel when his son, Will Moody, took over the camps.   The Assembly was headed and chaired by John F. Carson, who was a leading pastor at a Presbyterian church in Brooklyn. Thirteen years later, in 1922, The Stony Brook School was founded as an all boys boarding school. One of the strong supporters of the school was J. Wilbur Chapman, who wrote the lyrics to Jesus, What a Friend for Sinners! (AKA Our Great Savior). When Chapman died, his wife donated to The Stony Brook School the funds to pave the main entrance to the school, and to line it with trees. It is in his honor that, to this day, my address is 1 Chapman Pkwy, Stony Brook, NY.

In chapel today we learned about the roots of Stony Brook. It was quite interesting.

Interesting! It’s so cool to see how we are influenced by and blessed by Christians from the past.
