Several Sundays ago a lady was giving away starters for Amish Cinnamon Bread. I took one. I didn’t realize that I would have to wait several days before I could make it! The instructions said that the ziploc bag that held the liquid starter had to be mushed every day for ten days. Also, whatever was in the starter was causing bubbles to appear in the bags so that we had to frequently let the air out of the bags (that was fun). Finally, we made the bread on the tenth day. It turned out sooo good!
When you make it, you have to set aside four cups of the batter to create four new starters to give away to friends or to keep for yourself. Actually, I don’t think you have set aside new starters. But the instructions say that if you don’t, you’ll have to wait till someone gives you another starter because only the Amish know how to begin them. My mom said she did something like this before, but it was called a Friendship Cake. She also said that, technically speaking, the starter could have been started a hundred years ago! That’d be cool. It is kind of strange that you are keeping whatever is in the bag “alive.” During the ten days that it is sitting, you have to “feed” it sugar, flour, and milk. Anyway, last Sunday we let the starter die. We made our last batch and decided not to continue any new starters. Aunt Sharon, do you know anything about this Amish Cinnamon Bread?

it looks tasty! When we lived in Kentucky I had starter for some bread, but I can’t remember now what it was called, but it was sandwich bread. It was a little sweet. I think I kept it up for at least a year. I had to feed mine sugar and instant mashed potato flakes. Maybe it was sourdough bread….hmmm….I just don’t remember.
Wow, a whole year! Cool. That’s interesting that you had to add mashed potato flakes.
I’ve not heard of Amish Cinnamon Bread, but like you r mom, I did make what was called friendship cake. It’s just some sort of sourdough starter and there must be recipes for making starter available somewhere should you want to do it again.
