I enjoyed living at 9000 90th Street. I built a lot of forts out in the woods. Some were tree forts, others were built on the ground, and others were under the ground. We did a lot of exploring because there were woods all over the place. Sometimes we went to the woods at the West side of the housing development where we would swing on ropes tied from trees. I also loved to climb trees, and jump from limb to limb. We went hunting for fish with bow and arrow in the canal to the West of Starkey Elementary. I would fly kites, and send a home-made parachute up the string, and then jerk the string to send it floating down. We rode our bikes all over the place. We played in ditches and walked through culverts that could easily have been infested with water moccasins, but no one ever got bit, thankfully. I shudder now to think of some of the things we did. We also played a lot of football, baseball, basketball and soccer. Dad put up a basketball hoop on the telephone pole behind our house and the neighborhood kids came over a lot to play. We played football in the side yard. The Canners made a baseball field in the woods behind their house. We also played up at the school. I remember lots of lightning bugs in the spring, and the tremendous feeling of freedom when school was out for the summer.

Did you pretend you were Tarzan? I used to love that show. Sounds like you had fun there.

Some of my earliest memories: I remember “gee gees” and “gaa gaas.” I guess I dreamed about them. They were scary. The former were long and slender and the latter were short and fat. I think they were ghost-like. I remember being outside near someone’s house–I think Sharon was there too. We were playing with some other kids and this “big” guy looked out of a second story window and said something that made me afraid. I remember looking down on a sidewalk and seeing ants crawling on a sucker. I remember when the lights went out and we turned on the gas stove for light. There was a box of Ritz crackers sitting on the stove. I remember one Halloween there was a stairway in our house and there was a bowl of candy sitting on the banister at the bottom of the stairs. I remember hearing that someone knocked down someone’s snowman. I think Sharon and one of her friends were involved. I remember thinking that when we moved to Florida we would be in a dense jungle with monkeys and alligators and such.

Yes, I would get up every Saturday morning to watch Tarzan and all my other favorite Saturday morning shows. Yes, I used to pretend I was Tarzan, and developed a pretty good Tarzan yell. It was so good that one of the neighbors complained one time.

Isn’t anyone going to add any events to the list, or contribute stories?

I added my memories of Coulterville on one of the Blog Strings. That’s the only place in which I can contribute.

But, I too would love to hear from others.

I didn’t know you hunted with bow and arrow. That’s cool!
