I pulled over a cop…

by sejwa on October 12, 2007

A week night or so ago I was driving to my apartment from the local laundromat when I saw a bunch of colorful lights flashing behind me. So I pulled over wondering what I had done wrong. I rolled down the window as the policeman approached and asked if I had been going too fast. He said, “No, I am pulling you over because you don’t have your lights on.” I slapped my forehead. Then he asked me if I had been drinking. I said no as I was reaching for my insurance card from the glove compartment. He asked me again, and this time I remembered that I should look him in the eye.

After I handed him the card and my driver’s license, he went back to his car for ten minutes. Finally, he came over and told me that he wasn’t going to cite me for driving with my lights off, but he was going to cite me for having an expired insurance card. I thought that this was strange, because I usually replace the old ones straightaway. He gave me a ticket and told me the court date was November 4th.

After the policeman left I took a second look and realized that he had looked at the issue date, not the expiration date. I thought to myself, “Oh my goodness, I have to find him!” So I hurriedly drove off in the direction I had seen the police car go. I wondered how I would flag him down…blink my lights? Fortunately when I found him he was already pulled over. I showed him his mistake. He apologized and said that he would tear up the ticket. So I gave him the ticket and said that I would be willing to pay a fine for the first misdemeanor, but he told me with a smile, “No, don’t worry about it. Just drive with your lights on man.”

So I didn’t actually pull over a cop, but if the situation had been a bit different, I might have had to. 🙂

Sounds like quite an adventure! I’m glad you didn’t get a ticket!
