Persistence

During tutoring tonight someone was having trouble getting a computer program to write lab reports to work. She described the problem to me and I really had no idea what its source might be or how to go about finding out. I had half a mind to just tell her to present the problem to one of the professors the next day; but then I thought that I would not be being a good tutor if I did not at least attempt to tackle the problem. So I decided to attack the problem. Once I started working on it I actually soon discovered that the problem was a rather simple one and easy to solve. I was elated.

I have noticed also in my school work that when first presented with a problem, it may seem insurmountable; but when I stop worrying about it and stop despairing because “it’s too hard for me” and start working out the details, I often find that things start to make sense and that the problem is actually not “impossible.” I wonder how much fear and laziness keeps me from exciting and wonderful things.

Of course, there are those problems that always seem to elude solution. It seems that these kinds of problems are more the more numerous type. They do make life interesting though. Anyway, it was encouraging to be able to solve a problem, especially since I was able to help someone.

Hey, it’s nice to hear you solved a problem, and were able to help someone out. Do we ever stop learning? It doesn’t look like it. Anyway, keep it up. Hope things are going well.

I understand completely. I feel the same way – alot! For example, the sewing I have in the next room seems insurmountable, but if I’d just get in there and get started, I’d get the burden off my back.

Yes, time is an issue, too–a very big one, at least here in the United States.

Thanks for the post Seth. I think I miss out on many things also because of fear and laziness, but (at least from a practical standpoint) you post is encouraging.
