Geoffrey Chaucer

by Gary on January 27, 2007

According to the information at ancestry.com Geoffrey Chaucer is my “18th Great grandfather.” See the attached document. Ancestry.com is not certifying this to be the case, but according to the information people have uploaded as they add their ancestry data to everyone elses’, this is the result. I’m also distantly related to a number of other well-known people, but this one is a direct descent.

Update on July 4, 2015.

More research has been done since I made this post. It now appears that we are related to the sister of Geoffrey Chaucer. Her name was Catherine (1346-1369). Their parents were John De Dennington Chaucer (1308-) and Agnes Copton (1320-1381).

Catherine Chaucer married Simon Manning (1135-1365). Their son John Manning I (1365-1412) married Alice Walden. This Alice Walden was previously thought to be the daughter of Geoffrey Chaucer. But according to what I’m seeing now she would be a niece-in-law. So (assuming the other Manning-to-Taylor connection holds up), there is still a connection to Geoffrey Chaucer, but not a direct one as previously thought.

Wow, that’s so neat! Chaucer practically introduced Middle English as a literary language. It makes me wonder from whom else might we be descended that is famous…?

Uncle Gary, this update confirms the little research I’ve done on the topic. I’d like to share my own Ancestry.com family tree with you… How do I do that?

There should be a Share Your Tree option at this location in your account:
