Psalm 42

by Gary on July 15, 2007

The words of this song were taken from Psalm 42, and the music was created by our children, who gave us this song for Christmas of 2005. They just finished it. They sang it in church this morning and it came out very beautiful. They sang it for me again this afternoon and I recorded it. They note that this recording has some errors in it, but since they sang it this morning and have been practicing all week for it, they don’t want to redo it now. Seth is leaving for St. Louis tomorrow, so it will be a while before they can do it again.

Thank you very much–it is very fun to sing and was even more fun to put together (though not without frustrations at times, I think). Praise the Lord!

On Tuesday, Oct. 14th, we had a lecture on Medieval Music and the gregorian chants. It put me in the mind of this beautiful song. I told the students afterward about it and that if anyone wanted to, they could write one for their 40-hour project. Emily had her computer so she got on the blog and played them this recording. One girl was so inspired that she immediately said “That’s was I want to do!” They loved it!

Also, I find myself thinking of this song quite often. It comes into my head and I sign whatever I can remember. The more I hear it, the more I like it. I like they way the music goes with the words. Its really an amazing song!

Well I don’t sign it, I sing it! 🙂 But I’m sure signing it would be nice too.
Oh, and also, we went on a field trip yesterday to an abbey that has a basilica. The basilica has the best acoustics for a cappella singing. You guys and this song would sound awesome in there!

That would be fun, to sing in the abbey! I am glad this song has been able to be a blessing.

I had the choir director here take a listen/look at the music and he also said he liked it—enough to want to have the school(?) choir perform it! He did ask if we could simplify the harmony a tad—or find someone that might be willing to do that for us. Quite exciting. I think I’ll try to get the sheet music copyrighted first though. Perhaps over Thanksgiving break…
