Funny (interesting) things happen on the way to and from the airport

A friend, Sarah Lambert was visiting us for a few days and this morning we got up at 5AM to accompany her to the airport. We had arranged for a taxi to pick us up at 5:45 since you have to be there 3 hours ahead of time and her flight was leaving at 9:40. The taxi didn’t arrive on time and after a few calls found out he went to the wrong address. Traffic here can be bad here even that early plus it was raining which always slows things down as well so we were concerned about getting there on time. The taxi arrived and we departed at 6:10. Traffic wasn’t too bad until of course we got within a mile of the airport. We arrived at 6:53, went to the desk where they decide whether or not you owe taxes(she didn’t owe any) and then on to the Delta line. There we were told the flight was delayed 6-8 hours because the plane had a golpe(accident) the night before–who knows what as they didn’t say. However they were going to put her up in a hotel for that time (wow I thought, how nice) but she had to check her bag in then. After she checked her bag at a mini check in desk she had to go to the regular check in counter where she waited and waited and waited. We were going to have breakfast with her before she went through security so we stayed to wait for her. I was getting really hungry so Gary waited for her while I went to eat breakfast. While I was eating Gary called and said that Delta worked out for her to go on Avianca but it was leaving at 9 so she had to hurry and go through security. So she ended up leaving 40 minutes earlier than her regular flight.
Gary and I had a nice breakfast and headed home in a taxi. Traffic was a lot worse as it was still raining and about halfway home the taxi driver realized he had a flat tire so he dropped us off where there was a bus stop and also there were 2 taxis there. We walked over to the taxis but realized that one of them was getting ready to tow the other one. We went to the bus stop since we have a card for certain buses that are safe and nice. The first bus was loading people and we were in line. The bus closed the doors and took off before we realized that the guy in front of us in line was not getting on that bus. We got one soon after that– traffic still moving very slowly–then transferred to another bus and got home 2 hours after leaving the airport. So while we went 15 miles in 2 hours Sarah was half way to Miami.

What an adventure! But if I’ve learned anything, it’s that life is ironic. It takes a great deal of wisdom and humor to be able to laugh at the irony and enjoy it in spite of everything. That’s a lesson I’m still learning.
