Trip to Peru

by phyllis on March 22, 2014

Gary and I leave early tomorrow for Arequipa,Peru to help with Leadership Assessment and to see how the new missionaries are doing there. We will be there through Thurs getting back at 1AM on Friday. We will be staying in the hotel near the airport tonight so we won’t be taking a taxi through the streets of Bogota at 3AM which would not be safe. Have we felt unsafe here? No but we try to keep our ears open to safe practices and follow advice of those in the know.
It really isn’t a good time to leave here even for a few days because of what we are trying to accomplish here. Some things are going really well and we want to keep a good momentum. Other issues seem at a critical point and as we have seen in many instances things can spiral down quickly so we ask prayer for all of these circumstances. We do feel your prayers and are so thankful for them. We pray for you all as well.

We got back last Friday very early in the morning. We worked 13 hour days (this is getting to be a habit) so by the time we get home in June we will probably be due 6 weeks vacation time! Even though the Leadership Assessment process they were using is not one that Gary would use it was interesting to see it and be involved in the process. We felt like we were able to be helpful and it was good to be in touch with those we knew and meet new missionaries.
The city of Arequipa is called the City of White because the stones they use for building are made of “sillar.” It is almost as high as Bogota and we were surprised at how many tourists there were. We did see some llamas in a park and visited the central plaza but the rest of the time we were busy. The 3 missionaries that Gary was training in Bogota have been there 3 months and are trying to determine where in the city they will begin ministering.
