Conlanging

by micah on September 3, 2006

A long time ago, when I was in about 9th grade, I was studying Egyptian history. In one exercise, I had to learn about hyroglyphics and create my very own hyroglyphs and write some messages in it. This invariably piqued my interests in alphabets and languages and proceeded to create a couple new alphabets.

Another result of my curiosity was much internet research on writing systems and languages, and, in the process, found out that there are many people who find joy (and even use) in creating new langauges and systems of writing, one of the most famou being JRR Tolkien, as everyone is keen to point out.

Anyway, that curiosity subsided for a time, until recently when James and I were talking about he language(s) he is developing. So, I set out to re-find all of the vast information I had found years ago to share it with James, and now to share it with you all, since I figured probably more of you than just James would find this intersting.

There is all kinds of information on the conlangs (constructed languages) people have developed, resources that some conlangers (if that’s a word) have put together for each other and the curious, and even some pretty substantial information on how to do conlanging (if that’s a word 🙂 ).

So, for all you may be curious, I have arranged the more useful links below (+ = more useful, – = less usefull, * = interesting). Enjoy!!!

I must say, that after posting this post, I clicked on the first link and found another, interesting link about Quechua and my interest and curiosity for languages suddenly sky-rocketed! Maybe I’ll go learn Quechua, or to learn Chinese in China (with some friends I know), or maybe the Summer Institute of Linguistics! Hey, at this point in life, anything is possible – and I both can and can’t wait to see what God has in store for me.

I think it would be very exciting for you to study languages in one way or another. I think language is extremely interesting. If I have time I hope to learn some more and eventually make up my own language.

Well, Seth, you have some pretty decent resources here to get you started on your own language. You could make up a language that would make physics really easy to understand for everyone else 🙂
