Today I implemented a secure connection to this blog. Now when you log on (or go to any place within this site), the address of the site will begin with “https:” instead of with “http:”
This means that the information on this site is encrypted. This is especially important for when you log in. Now no one could steal your username or password as you log in. It’s unlikely that they would have done it before, but now it’s pretty much impossible.
Practical implications for you:
- If you have a bookmark for this site, change it from “http://family.waldecker.net/blog” to “https://family.waldecker.net/blog” (without the quote marks)
- The next time you log into this site, your browser won’t “remember” the password because the address has changed (the added “s” makes it a different address)
- So when you log in, type in your username and password manually and the browser should ask you if you want to update your password.
- If it doesn’t ask you, you can update it manually. Go to the following site: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/saved-password-editor/ and install this add-on. You’ll then have to close and restart Firefox. Then go to your Preferences (on Mac, under the Firefox menu) or Options (on a Windows machine, the Options submenu is under the Tools menu. Go to the Security tab. Then click on Saved Passwords. Then click on New. Choose the “http authentication” option. Type in the address: https://family.waldecker.net/blog/ Then type in something like Family Blog. Then type in your username and password for the blog.

Dad, if you are able to log on and use the site, which obviously you are, then you don’t have to worry about it. I’ll take a look at your computer next time I’m there.
I also took away all the links (left column of blog) that were not internal to this site. But as I think about it, in most cases it probably wasn’t necessary. If you want your link back up, just let me know.

I changed my password. And yes, I did miss the link to Audrey’s blog, since I did not keep track of the web address on my own.
