Spring

by Tom and Judy on March 30, 2009

We are in the process of building three raised beds for planting. The beds are just to the right of the shed. We removed a few trees and hopefully we will get enough sun to grow some beans, tomatoes, etc. We are thinking of planting pole beans. The family post as been kind of idle lately. Whats going on at your house. Some specific prayer requests would be appreciated. You can pray for Redeemer Church in its transition to a new pastor. Next Sunday the congregation is to decide whether or not to call Scott Willet. He did a good job as a candidate. Judy is going with her daughter Debbie to visit in North Carolina next week. I don’t believe that I will go. The Johnson family is having a reunion in May at Bon Clarken. Let’s hear from you. Dad

I was thinking of doing a raised bed for gardening too. Not sure how to go about it and what kind of materials to use. I was thinking about doing it next week because I’m on spring break next week. Dad you could come stay here and help me make a raised bed! 🙂 But maybe you were wanting to stay home. Anyway, it would be fun for ME!

I just bought a book called “Square Foot Gardening.” You build a box (usually without a bottom) and put good soil in it. Then you divide it into (usually) 16 1×1 sections. You plant different things in each section, or plant the same things but at different times. I also put a weed screen at the bottom of it. I built one and we’ll see how it works.

It does seem like there has been little activity, but I checked and this month has seen more activity than any month since last August. Here are the number of posts (this doesn’t include comments–only posts) per month:

Month 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 Monthly Average
Jan 50 49 13 14 31.5
Feb 47 47 20 17 33
Mar 54 27 23 18 30
Apr 31 28 19 26
May 20 21 19 20
Jun 21 14 25 20
Jul 16 32 11 20
Aug 34 39 28 34
Sep 26 30 13 23
Oct 16 25 17 19
Nov 38 8 17 15 19.5
Dec 41 56 16 6 30
Yearly Average 39.5 32 28.5 17 16 25.5

In general, though, the number of posts per month has been going down. As of today there have been 1,074 posts published to the blog. If you want to know how many of these you have posted, look at the Category section at the top of the main page, find your name, and then look at the number beside your name that is in parenthesis. If everyone made only one post a month, we would be above our current monthly average.

Our raised beds are 16 feet long and four feet wide with a walkway between them. They are made with 6×6 timbers that are 8 feet long. They are not cheap. We put cardboard on the bottom, spread some leaves and then filled almost to the top with well rotted manure. We are going to add some top soil, mix the top few inches together and plant when o.k. to do so. In our area that is after the 10th of April. Janice, I will think on stopping with you while the two ladies go on to visit Judy’s sister. Dad

Sounds good. The only other time we made raised beds was when we lived in Pudahuel. That was the best crop we ever had.

I’m wondering how tall I should make it. We have decided that the sunniest place is right behind the deck. What is the box made of, Gary? Dad, that would be great! You think on it.

My book says 6 inches of dirt (and a six inch tall box). Unless you want to grow carrots or potatoes are something else with long roots.

I forgot to ask what days Judy and Debbie will be going. Friday we will be taking a day trip to the mountains.

Nice to hear what’s going on down there in Atlanta 🙂 I am so excited about having a garden. I wish I had more time to dedicate to it! Hm…if we keep up the rate of postings, we’ll lose touch in a few years 😉

OK, here is one of those rare posts from me. Kate was great in her role of Katrina in the play “I remember Mama”. It was her acting debut. The director was pretty pleased. Oh, yes the play was quite a success. She is in recovery mode right now. Mostly sleeping and getting caught up with studies. As far as gardening goes I found some time to prune my grapes a few weeks ago, probably just in time before the sap started to run. We had some rough weather last night. A number of buildings were blown apart about six miles from us. Some think a tornado came by.

Judy and Debbie are going to Burlington on Tuesday April 7th and return on Thursday. I can stop and maybe stay with you and help with a raised bed on Wednesday if that would help. Dad

Yes the bed should be about six inches deep. Dad

I am still looking for another job, or at least another part-time job. I haven’t been looking very hard yet, though. I might even volunteer at an animal hospital just to know if that is something I want to pursue.
