Out of the blue comes something New…York!?

by micah on May 14, 2008

Last week I received an email from a missionary-kid friend of mine (we were on the same hall in college), saying that his high-school was looking for a Spanish teacher. I was interested, so I contacted the school yesterday and sent them my resume. That evening, I spoke with the chair of the (language?) department and she seemed very interested in having me teach. They would like me to come up there, interview me, see the school, and teach a class–maybe tomorrow! (“Aahhhhh” and “AWESOME”)

The school is called Stony Brook School, and is a Christian boarding school, on Long Island, New York–of all places. It seems to have a very vibrant community and the school explicitly seeks to have Christ at the center of everything they do.

If hired, I would be teaching AP Spanish, Spanish 4 and probably two sections of Spanish 1. The average class size is 14-18 students. I would be living in one of the dorms (in my own apartment), have dorm-duty once a week (and on the weekend once a month, I think), and probably assist coaching soccer or some other sport. I would start in August…THIS August.

This really appears to be an answer to prayer: I was hoping to find a full-time job by the end of the Summer, this job would allow me to pursue some of my interests (language, investing in others, teaching), it would provide benefits (and my current plan would only take me to the end of the Summer), and this is the best time of year for Rock Creek Fellowship to find someone to replace me because the Summer is less busy. Also, I was told that the faculty at the school would help mentor me as I learn the ins and outs of teaching, and the school would also contribute financially for me to pursue a graduate degree.

Please pray with me that God would make it clear to whether, if offered the job, if I should accept it. Probably my main concern is that working/living at the school would consume all my time. I’m not sure I would want to live in a bubble, but on the same note, I think it could be a great learning experience and something I would be willing to do for a couple/few years.

Anyways, please pray for me–and let me know if you think of any questions I should ask them about the job or the school.

P.S. Nathan, since you go to Rock Creek, please do not mention this to anyone there yet, though I’ve already spoken with Eric Youngblood about it.

Micah, this sounds like such a neat opportunity! I’ll be praying. Micah, you left out soccer in the list of things you are interested in! Soccer, language, teaching, and investing in others! What a combo! I would surely miss you at home, though!

Micah. It really sounds like God is doing something. I think you would make a great teacher, and the situation would be a good fit for you, I think. I have two pieces of advice as check out this opportunity. First, be yourself in the interview and allow your questions and responses to be led by your heart and not just your head. Second, I would advise that you focus on the job duties and your skills and experiences early in the interview. Don’t ask details about benefits, time off, etc. until later in the visit, and even then you want to bring this up naturally. This way, you and `the school get a better feel for whether or not you are the right fit for the role, and then it makes sense to talk about the other stuff. We’ll be prayin’ for ya.

I’ll be leaving Thursday afternoon. I’m supposed to be receiving my e-ticket by email (and it still hasn’t come, so you could pray about that). I’ll arrive late Thursday night and do all of the interviewing process on Friday. I’ll fly home on Saturday morning/afternoon–a very fast trip!

We talked to Micah today around 5:30. He said things were going well, but that they kept him extremely busy and he was tired.
