An Afternoon in Highlands

by Gary on September 3, 2007

On Sunday, Sept 2, we met the Churchills in Highlands, NC. Nathan came with us too. It was a short visit because both of us had a 3.5 hour trip to get there. We had lunch, celebrated Linnea’s 9th birthday, walked around town and visited Sunset Rock. A good time was had by all.

I had fun too, but for some reason I was very tired that day. I feel better today, having gotten a good sleep last night.

I wish I could have been there 🙁 On Sunday I went to a Greek Festival with some students from the physics department (one of them is from Greece). There was typical Greek food there, and there was a live band playing Greek music. It was fun. I ate lamb chops and spanakopita (spinach pie). I also had a bite of saganaki (fried cheese) and fried squid (calamari). The squid was rubbery, but not so bad.

What is Greek music like?

The first two things that come to my mind to describe the music is Spanish and Jewish music. They use a special instrument called a ‘bouzuki’. It sort of looks like a mandolin, but it has a longer neck and a bigger body. I like the way it sounds.
