Its a very formal dance. Formal in attire, but I get the idea not very formal otherwise. Other than that, James will have to describe it, since I haven’t been to one in almost 30 years.
Back when I went to my high school prom (after I was out of High School), they held them in the cafeteria. Formal attire, but cake, punch, cookies, and a DJ with the Greatest Hits of the 70’s. I hated it. I don’t like those sort of things. When we visited Furman the other day, I noticed many bulletins announcing their Spring Dance. It was an instructional, formal dance with professional dance instructors teaching the students many forms of dance.

At proms, the girls wear dresses and the guys wear tuxedos (formal attire). They had a DJ there that played different music: primarily rap music (the way most dances are today), with a few slow dances. Some of the dancing is… well, a little questionable; I don’t find it difficult to refrain from participating (to say the least). But it was a lot of fun; I had a good time.
