Today I went and spoke with the boss of the interpreters at Erlanger. I asked whether she (and her boss) had decided on if/when to open up an interpreter position. Her answer was encouraging and discouraging at the same time. She said that I was very high (if not at the top?) of their list of interpreters to hire, that she had my resume in a place easy for her to reach and remember (pointing to her cabinet), and in general seemed like she wanted me to be hired. The discouraging part was how slow things move at erlanger (I call it “bureaucratic inertia,” or “moving an elephant” 🙂 ). Erlanger has currently put a “freeze” on all hiring until some company has finished reviewing and approving all the job positions they currently offer. The interpreters’ boss said she didn’t want to offer positions to somebody and then perhaps have this company say the position is unnecessary. Nonetheless, she seemed implicitly confident that a position would open up and that I would be hired (at least, she told me she would let me know as soon as anything happened). Who knows how long I will have to wait. Two of the current interpreters were hired six months after their job interviews!!! I’ll just have to wait until the elephant moves!!
